My favorite album of 2007, an incredibly dense, frenetic, and complex album by the 'side project' of Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug.

Towering accomplishment by Stephin Merritt, he recorded over 100 songs for this, and then pared it down to 69 because he felt people wouldn't want to listen to 100. Spans a wealth of genres, jumping from folk to punk to electropop to waltz and back again. Absolutely thrilling to listen to.

A spectacular album of wonderful folk and baroque pop, with lush instrumentation and thoughtful lyrics. Sufjan's 50 states objective may seem like a gimmick, but the depth of knowledge and respect he's shown to Illinois show that it will be an amazing accomplishment if he gets anywhere even near close to completing it.

Brilliant album, full of emotion and depth, and perhaps the best marriage of orchestral strings and electronic beats I've heard. Also, contains 'Bachelorette', my favorite Björk song. Wonderful.

This album really opened my ears to electronica, and electronic music on the whole. Before I'd thought it was soulless, but this album was able to convey so many different emotions, from ecstasy to claustrophia, that I was completely blown away.

One of the greatest albums by one of the greatest bands. Peter Buck once said side 1 was the best thing R.E.M. ever recorded.

One of the great anti-war albums, one of the first major artists in the post Iraq war era to stand up and say something is wrong with the way the Government is handling the situation through their music.

One of the all time greats, an album of modern disillusion that should be listened to from beginning to end. Incredibly original, and spawned a legion of (mostly poor) imitators.

Considered by many the defining album of Britpop, containing its defining song, 'Common People'. This is one of those albums I still remember where and when the first time I heard it was, I was so blown away by 'Mis-Shapes', 'Common People', and 'Disco 2000'. Compared to what was playing on American radio at the time, it was a huge blast of fresh air, the witty and arch lyrics, the melodicism, the full instrumentation.

One of my favorite albums of all time. John Squire's guitar work, Ian Brown's detached vocals, and the driving drums and bass work of Mani and Reni fused to make an epic, groundbreaking record.

The absolutely perfect sound of the shoegazing movement. Lush, ethereal, melodic instrumentation with walls of guitar.

My review
One of the landmark albums of all time, Joy Division laid the groundwork for much of the 80's post-punk developments in just two powerful LPs. Closer is full of raw emotion and fractured instrumentation, and 9 incredible songs.
